Today I installed my surveillance / camera system at my off grid cabin. With bears and potentially humans stopping around, it's important to protect the cabin and it's contents. It's also interesting to see the wildlife that's roaming around the cabin area.
I ended up going with the Arlo 2 plus system which offers a very wide field of view, excellent nighttime coverage and audio. The cameras record on motion and the footage is synced in real time to my Arlo account, accessed through my smart phone anytime. As we have WIFI, we can monitor everything around the cabin. Even if the cameras are stolen, the footage will remain.
I've also setup SpyPoint Trail cameras around the cabin, recording on their own as well as to a secondary "secure" box. As with the Arlo setup, if cameras are stolen or torn down, I'll know about it!
The afternoon was spent heading down the lake and exploring the trail to Bighshell Lake, located to the northwest of the cabin. We only walked the first trail, 725 metres through a forest fire burn that occurred 5 years ago. It's always interesting to see the forest regenerating. The Birch trees are coming up thick, providing excellent browse for Moose. Loads of Moose droppings are a sure sign that Moose are in the area. Such a different forest from the Caribou trails explored last week.
I hope you all enjoy and stay safe!

Advice for someone planning a trip next year? Outfitter, dates etc…
Adam Craig Outdoors
hope you don’t have to use those cameras!!
solotripper
Hoping not either but there are people that snoop around and those that look for opportunities to take. They’re up, so we’ll see what comes of it. Thanks for watching

Awesome video of the surroundings. Very cool of your wife to tag along. Just a suggestion Harlan, how about a mini tour of the cabin. Just a short video included with another video. Thanks for sharing and we’ll catch ya on the next adventure. ATB Mike
solotripper
Hey Mike thank for checking this one out. For sure, I’ll be doing that shortly. I’m planning on going through the entire setup in short videos to accurately portray what this place is like. Cheers
Craig Betts
hard to believe that even being that remote you have to have a surveillance system you would think it would be safe but sorry to say no place is now, I have friends who live out in the country but still have get un-wanted visitors when there not home, should add enjoyed the hike too
solotripper
Hey Craig, ya it’s the world we live in now. With so many float planes in the area, we’ve had visitors in the past and out stuff disturbed but couldn’t prove who it was. This will change that if anyone comes around again. More importantly, I can keep an eye out for those bears! Thanks for watching

Great info looks like something I want to look into. Look forward to your solar system
solotripper
Thanks. Hopefully have that vid up next week

I’m loving these daily videos. Despite the bugs that is heaven on earth. Your wife makes those beautiful leather creations, right?
solotripper
Thanks Derek. Appreciate hearing that. Yes she does a lot of the work, I do some as well. We love leathercraft!!!

Harlan, how fast is your internet…is it like dial up or what.? can you watch a netflix movie…how much per month… what company
solotripper
It’s fast for the middle of nowhere. The reason my vids are short is because the upload speeds suck. This video took 3 hours to upload lol. Download speeds are much faster thus the reason I can stream YouTube, Netflix etc. Company is Xplornet. They’re pretty good. Equipment wasn’t that expensive all things considered.

oh no! you said por-tidge… Not the proper por-tah-ge…. What happened???
solotripper
Hahaha
RkF
That’s because “portidge” is the correct pronunciation. I want to stick hot coals in my ear’s every time I hear “por-tah-ge”. 👊😋 Be well. Roger

Really nice video! Thanks for sharing

Oh the black flies look fun. Have you got any interesting captures from the surveillance system you can share. Blue berry pancakes! Oh they were nearly as good as the blueberry and peanut butter wraps we enjoyed on our trip two years ago..
solotripper
Nothing much captured yet but I’m sure that will change. Can’t wait for blueberries!!!

Cool video! I’m planning a trip this summer and I was wondering if there is any way to buy those Topographical maps of WCPP? Even a pdf would work great
solotripper
Sorry don’t have anything available at the moment. Where are you thinking of in terms of a route ?
Jedd Paulsen
@solotripper We are planning to start at Leano and work our way up to Mexican Hat and Wrist. Our goal is catch a lot of fish and I have also never caught a lake trout

1. What´s the weirdest thing you have seen on your cameras?
2. Are you allowed to have a firearm?
solotripper
Haven’t seen anything weird yet this year other than a bear, but that’s normal around here. Hoping for some good footage by the time I leave. Hunting is not permitted up here, although First Nations / Natives hunters do access the area as it’s part of their traditional hunting grounds. They hunt for Moose, Geese and Duck.
Steven Rochon
Thanks for the video. Always appreciated. You mentioned wintertrekker I think in your last video. I subscribed to his channel. This guy knows a thing or two about being in the country to put it mildly. Thanks. As always another awesome video!!! Bring on the next one 👊👊👊
solotripper
Hey Steve, thanks for watching. Ya he’s the real deal, a wealth of knowledge. Glad you found him. New video up in a few hours !!

I use WYZE cams from amazon. 40 bucks plus I use the outdoor housings sold on amazon. You can link them to smart bulbs so cabin light comes on for a bit when triggered. They also have SD and cloud storage.
solotripper
Thanks, I’ll have to check those out !!
RkF
Thank’s for letting us tag along Harlan. I saw below that you would be taking us on a tour of your cabin later on. Looking forward to that. Stay safe! Roger
kjm_outdoors
Hey, How long do those cameras last on one charge?

keep us updated on the spookyness of the cabin and the surrounding area — very interesting indeed

Middle of no where’s, the best places on earth! Cool to see your security system, I am also interested in your solar setup man can’t wait to see!
solotripper
Thanks Teunis, I feel fortunate. You have any trips planned ? Gonna do the solar video tomorrow so maybe it’ll be up Sunday. Thanks and stay safe
Teunis Richards: Freak of Nature
Lots of trips planned man, we were thinking of coming back your way later this fall! But it will all depend on how COVID behaves in the near future. It is keeping us busy at work..luckily we are fortunate enough to have Algonquin in are backyard as a plan B.
